    Community-Driven Design

    About This Project

  • Full Yard Waterscaping

    Full Yard Waterscaping

    About This Project

A full yard renovation, this project includes a front yard transformation, a new narrow boulevard garden along the client's driveway, and a new rain garden and native planting in the side yard. The rain garden receives stormwater from downspout near side door of the house. A dry creek bed on south side of property conveys water from two downspouts on south side of house to the sidewalk, bringing water into a new boulevard rain garden between homeowner’s driveway and the street corner. Hardscaping elements that accentuate this project include limestone retaining wall stone, boulder and outcroppings, and stepping stones.

  • Landcare for Commercial Sites

    Landcare for Commercial Sites

    About This Project

This is a commercial site our landcare crew maintains, and which Metro Blooms Design+Build designed and installed in 2018. Located in within NE Minneapolis with few green areas, our team worked with the creative challenge of tucking in as much pollinator habitat as we could in a small space. The project incorporates a rain garden that captures runoff from the roof building, and native plants were prioritized for pollinator support. The site also includes permeable pavement to capture additional runoff. See more...

  • Front Yard Curb Appeal

    Front Yard Curb Appeal

    About This Project

This client wanted to replace their front lawn with a rain garden that captures runoff from their downspouts. We incorporated stepping stones as well as a boulder outcropping on the hillside above the sidewalk. The plants included in this design help filter stormwater, reduce slope erosion, and bring lots of curb appeal to the property! See more...

  • Green Infrastructure Retrofit

    Green Infrastructure Retrofit

    About This Project

In 2020, we partnered with the Southeast Como Improvement Association to restore and add a rain garden to the traffic diverter at the intersection of Talmage Ave SE and 15th Ave SE in Minneapolis. The new planting collects runoff from the surrounding roads, provides habitat for pollinators and birds, and beautifies the neighborhood! Stormwater runoff is intercepted from a storm drain via an underground pipe into the rain garden. There, over half a million gallons of stormwater each year soak into the ground and pollutants are filtered by the soil and plant roots. Drought and salt tolerant native plants were selected to withstand the sunny conditions and proximity to the road. This project was funded by a grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization with additional support from the City of Minneapolis Public Works and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

  • Rain Garden Care for Minneapolis Public Schools

Rain Garden Care for Minneapolis Public Schools

    About This Project

Stormwater features are everywhere! Many public schools capture their stormwater runoff through rain gardens and other vegetated stormwater best management practices (BMPs). Our landcare crew helps maintain Minneapolis Public Schools rain gardens to make sure they are properly functioning and compliant with City of Minneapolis requirements. Cutting back dead plant material, weeding, and removing anything blocking rain garden inlets helps them keep capturing stormwater runoff and protecting water quality all while creating large areas of pollinator habitat.

  • Boulevard Matrix Design

    Boulevard Matrix Design

    About This Project

Located between the sidewalk and street, this boulevard “bioswale” is excavated and lowered below the grade of the curb to collect stormwater runoff. Tho achieve the client’s vision for a modern, clean look, we created a matrix design that staggers a primary plant (in this case fox sedge and prairie dropseed) throughout the planting, with flowering plants added in a scattered pattern. The selected plants, including aromatic aster, butterfly milkweed, penstemon and pale purple coneflower, bloom at different times, creating continuous visual interest across the growing season.
