About This Project

Metro Blooms Design+Build partnered with Masjid An-Nur, the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO), and several community and government partners to transform the mosque’s landscape into the Twin Cities’ first “Eco-Mosque.” Completed in 2020, the project addressed chronic flooding at the North Minneapolis site by installing 13 rain gardens, permeable pavement, a bioswale, and pollinator-friendly plantings. Together, these features capture and filter more than 329,000 gallons of stormwater each year, keeping pollutants out of the Mississippi River while creating habitat for pollinators and wildlife.

Beyond its environmental impact, the redesigned landscape provides a welcoming plaza, seating areas, and shaded gathering spaces that strengthen the mosque’s role as a community hub. The project is a model of environmental justice, demonstrating how green infrastructure can improve water quality, reduce flooding, and support community well-being. With leadership from Masjid An-Nur and support from partners including the Metropolitan Council, Hennepin County, the Minnesota Muslim Leaders Coalition, and the Northside Residents Redevelopment Council, the Eco-Mosque now serves as a beacon of sustainability and stewardship in North Minneapolis.
